You've already started the day upset. Your dad asked you to get started cleaning out the garage which is totally unfair because half of this stuff is his and not yours. Instead of arguing with him, you decided to just get it over with.
<<type 30ms start 2s>> When you enter the garage, you're immediately overwhelmed. You and your father moved into his old family home after your mom died. He said that he wanted to be closer to family but you're pretty sure that he just couldn't stand still being in that house without her. The garage is full of stuff from when your dad was a teenager. Old torn and shredded band t-shirts, "JNCO" branded jeans that look like they could fit at least two of your dad in them, tons of CD's, and a walkman with headphones still plugged in. <</type>>
<<type 30ms start 1s>> Your dad //did// say that you could keep anything that you found. You wonder for a moment if the old disk player still works.
[[Choose a CD]] <</type>><img src="https://tomor-owland.neocities.org/Images/cdstack.jpg">
You decide to test it. You start looking through his collection of CDs, trying to find one from a band you know...

You decide to pick up //Pussy Whipped// by Bikini Kill. You've heard of the band and their influence a few times on the internet so you decided to give them a shot.
Now comes the testing. You pop the CD into the old machine and [[press the power button]]The walkman whirs to life. You're a little shocked by this because you were almost sure that it wouldn't work. You quickly put on the tethered headphones and the music drifts right into your brain. You close your eyes to enjoy the... slightly grainy sounding song. once its over, you [[open your eyes]].When you open your eyes, you feel much more determined to clean out the garage, just in case you find more treasures. You end up finding a few more things that you want to keep. Namely a couple books, a Game Boy and Game Boy Color, and some band shirts (you found a few that were surprisingly new looking). Once you feel like you've significantly made a dent in the mess of the garage, you decide to take a break and [[head inside]].When you reenter the old family home, it doesn't look, well, //old//. You could've sworn that the crusty 70's wallpaper was peeling and the tile in the kitchen had cracked. You suppose that while you were cleaning up the garage, your dad... replaced the tile and wallpaper with exact copies? Hm.
You decide to push those thoughts aside and [[open the fridge]], you are a little hungry after exerting yourself so much, afterall.Inside the fridge is a lot of snacks that you've never heard of before. Especially the "Squeeze-It' drinks. Must be some off brand snacks that your dad got on his grocery run. While all of the red flags kept popping up, you just kept pushing them aside. That is until you heard someone yell from the other room:
(psst! Enter what you want your dad's name to be!)
"<<textbox "$name" "">>!"
You immidiately freeze up. Someone is in your house and they sound //mad//.
You hear footsteps coming towards your place in the kitchen. You weigh your options. You decide that you could either:
<<type 30ms skipkey "Control">>[[Run]] for your life
or
[[Stay put]] and stand your ground<</type>>You decide to stay put and face this person. You put and a brave facade but you're not sure that you would be able to run even if you wanted to.
The man comes into view, he takes an authoritative stance and stares me down. He looks vaguely familiar. He looks a little bit like your dad. Sameish age and all. Is this a long lost uncle that you never knew about? No, that couldn't be. Your grandpa always made a huge deal about your dad being his only son.
That's who he looks like! Your grandpa! He looks like your grandpa but much younger and angrier. Soo.. long lost great uncle?
You suppose you've been staring too long when the man says, "Just gonna sit there and stare at me, punk?"
"I was calling you and you ignored me, got an excuse?" He added.
Huh? but he was calling for my dad. Clearly I'm not $name.
"[[Huh?]]", you ask?Your mind briefly shifts to running away. However, your body is completely frozen in fear. You couldn't run even if you wanted to.

"[[Huh?]]", you ask?Obviously, this confused you greatly. How could this guy confuse you with your dad? You're much younger and you don't really share a lot of features with the guy. Most people say that you look more like your mother. Your dad has paler skin and freckles all over his arms. Not to mention he has a completely different hair color and facial structure that you.
While the man in front of you lectures you about being respectful and whatever, you look away from him. You've never been able to make eyecontact with people, especially when they're yelling at you. When you look to the side, you catch your reflection in window above the sink.
Your eyes widen when you realize that you //definitely// don't look like you. In fact, you have paler skin, freckles, a different hair color, and completely different facial features. You look like the pictures that you've seen of your dad when he was a teenager.
[[Shit..]]You completely tune out the man's rambling as you feel like you might puke.
The man.. your grandfather. Notices the newly organized garage and raises his eyebrows. He pats you on the shoulder and seemingly forgets about the whole "you need to be more respectful" rant and instead commends you for cleaning up the garage without him having to ask.
"I'm glad that my only son is finally gaining some respect", He comments.
He gazes down at the walkman that I'm now clutching onto for dear life with a hint of distain.
"Sure could use better taste in music though. Your friend is waiting for you at the front door."
You finally snap out of your stupor at that.
<<type 30ms skipkey "Control">>
[[What Friend?]]
[[See for yourself]] <</type>>"What friend?" You ask, curious.
"The one that's always over here eating our food and crashing on our couch," Your Granddad replies. "He's waiting for you at the front door."
You nod, resigning to just find out for yourself.
You walk to the front door and open it, revealing a boy around the same age as you. He's a little taller and has longer, wavier, blonde hair. He's wearing a band T-Shirt, showing his love for the same band that you were listening to before.
You suppose that you've been analyzing too long when he clears his throat to catch your attention.
"You ready?" He asks excitedly.
"Ready for what?" You reply. You feel that you're entitled to some form of context, even if you're the only one who knows the situation.
"You know..." He nods over to my grandfather, or I guess my father, suggesting that it's something that he can't hear.
"Oh, right!" You just go along with it, honestly wanting out of this house. It feels too weird.
"I'm [[ready]]."You decide to get to the bottom of what the hell is going on, and the only way that you can thing to do that is by following along and seeing what happens.

"I'm [[ready]]."You follow the unknown boy to his truck. On the way, you start thinking about who he could be from your own life but nothing is coming to mind. Your dad has never introduced you to anyone who looks like this guy before. This makes you wonder what happened between this boy and your dad but you can't dwell on it for very long before you're climbing into his pickup.
"I can't believe that you forgot about this party, dude," He says in disbelief. "You've been talking about it for weeks!"
"Guess it just slipped my mind," You replied.
"Well, I hope you're still excited because I heard it's gonna be crazy."
You smile a little and listen along to the music on the radio as he drives, the carride remaining silent besides the boy occasionally pointing things out that he sees on the drive and finds amusing.
In no time, you're [[at the party]].As soon as you guys pull up to the party, you can instantly tell that it's not as "crazy" as your "friend" thought. When you enter the actual house that the party is being held in, your suspicions are confirmed. It's a few kids passing around a joint with music playing too quietly from a nearby boombox. No cool lights or anything either, the lights are just //on//.
You must have been making a face at this whole situation because your friend pats you on the back, nodding.
"I think that we can still leave without them knowing?"
As the two of you turn to leave, you hear an annoying, grating voice directed at the two of you.
"Reid! $name! You made it!" You turn and are greeted with the much younger face of your uncle Eddie.
"Hey Ed..." The boy, who you now know is Reid, replied. "We can't actually stay, we have to study for a math test we have coming up."
"When have you guys ever studied for a test?" Uncle Eddie questioned.
"Better late than never!" Reid exclaimed, and with that, he's rushing you back out [[to his car]]."God, that looked terrible," He chuckles once you're back in his car. "Wanna go home or to our spot?"
You ponder this for a moment. You've decided that either you're dreaming, in a fucked up coma, or you need to resolve something from your dad's past so that you can get back to the present and into your own body. So you guess that your options are either going home and resolving things between your dad and grandfather, or figuring out what happened between your dad and Reid for him to never have talked about him to you before.
<<type 30ms skipkey "Control">>
[[Go Home]]
[[Go to "Your Spot"]] <</type>>Are you serious? This is clearly not daddy issues! Ugh, as if!
<<back>>"The spot," You reply.
Reid nods and takes off. The surroundings during the trip are unfamiliar and you can see that the sun is going down. You really don't want to spend days here so you want to figure this out as quickly as possible.
Reid drives you to a cliff overlooking the rest of the city. How cliche. He parks and turns off the truck before pulling a blanket and some small pillows from behind the seats. Seems like this is a common occurance. You both climb out of the pickup and he lays the blanket down in the bed, tossing the pillows in before he climbs in, laying down. You climb in as well with some minor difficulty, laying next to him.
"I can't believe that we graduate soon," He says. "Kindergarten feels like yesterday. Remember when you broke your wrist from falling off the monkey bars?
As Reid laughs at this memory, you start doing some math. Your dad graduated in 1994 so that must mean that that's what year it is. Your dad met your mom in 1998, right before he graduated college, and you were born in 2003. You suppose that gives you some reference to the timeframe.
"Are you still planning on going to that college," He asks, almost sadly.
"I am," You reply, knowing that your dad did in fact go to college. A college across the country from his hometown at that.
You look up at the stars forming as the sun sets when the silence gets too [[loud]].Reid finally breaks the tension by grabbing your hand and squeezing it.
"It's totally uncool of you to leave me alone like this," He says jokingly. Or, you suppose that it was supposed to sound like joking. He looked like he wanted to cry.
"Why don't you come with?" You ask out of genuine curiosity.
"You know college isn't for me and I can't really afford to get my own place over there," He replies.
You frown but nod at that and squeeze his hand back. You can tell that your dad was important to him and he must've been important to your dad. Why else would you be here, trying to solve this problem.
You know that college was important to your dad. His college town is also where he met your mom. What should you do?
<<type 30ms skipkey "Control">>
[[Suggest being roommates]]
[[Suggest that he starts saving money]]
[[Forget about college and stay]]<</type>>"Why don't we room together? Dorm life is overrated," You suggest.
"Really? Do you think that we could do it?" He seemed excited by this.
"I don't see why not? Might be hard but we can do it," You say, giving him a smile.
He laughs giddily at that and kisses you on the cheek. You freeze up at that. You hadn't really considered that the nature of Reid and your dad's relationship was anything but platonic. That's... impossible.
"Sorry, I know you don't like doing stuff like that out in the open. I was just too excited!" He exclaims.
You're suddenly filled with fear. What's going to happen to your mom if your dad and Reid stay together? What's going to happen to you? You know that this is a selfish way of thinking and that this is for your dad's happiness but how could you not be afraid?
Reid eventually drives you home. When you go to bed in your new room (your dad's old one), you wake up back in the garage. Music is playing in your ears from the walkman that you found. You take the headphones off and let them rest around your neck.
[[What a crazy day dream that was.]]"Maybe if you start saving now, you can find a place you can afford by then. Then we can stick together?" You suggest, desperate to resolve this dilema so you can go home.
"Yeah right dude, you're leaving in, like, two months. There's no way I could save enough by then", He laments.
"Right..." Damn, you assumed that there was more time. Maybe this isn't even the issue that you're meant to resolve. Maybe you're still meant to leave Reid behind.
The two of you spend the rest of the night watching the stars and talking about anything that comes to Reid's mind. He doesn't let go of your hand until you both get back into the truck and he drives you back home.
When you go to bed in your new room (your dad's old one), you wake up back in the garage. Music is playing in your ears from that cursed walkman. You shove them off in fear and storm back into the house. The wallpaper is once again peeling, the tiles are cracked, and your dad is cooking with the same mopey expression that he had before.
It seems nothing has changed.
When you eventually worked up the courage to ask about Reid, after the initial blow up that your dad has, he eventually tells you that Reid died in a car crash not long after he left for college. He didn't go into detail. You didn't want him to. You immediately regretted your choice. But who knows, maybe this was inevitable.
[[End]]"Maybe I just shouldn't go. College is expensive and I don't really need to get a degree for what I want to do," You say.
"You'd really give up on that for me?" Reid sounded almost hopeful. Maybe with a twinge of guilt.
"Yeah, I would. I think it would be for the best. We'd both be happy," You're not sure that that's true. You know how much your dad enjoyed college. And how serious he is about you going as well.
After a few more hours of talking about the life Reid and your father would have here, you guys get back into the truck. He starts to drive you home. You never make it home.
There was a bright flash. Maybe two headlights. And then...
Nothing.
